Otology / Neuro-Otology

Otology is the area which deals with diseases of the ear. This is a highly diverse area, which includes the management of glue ear (fluid build-up in the middle ears causing hearing loss); assessment and treatment of vertigo (dizziness); repair of tympanic membrane (eardrum) perforations; and complex surgery to remove chronic ear disease from the middle ear and mastoid. Neuro-Otology deals with more complex lesions of the inner ear including tumours and skull base defects. The Department of Otolaryngology at SIVUH performs a huge number of Otological procedures annually. Complex Neuro-Otological procedures are performed at Cork University Hospital in collaboration with Neurosurgery.
